Tools / K-lite codec mega pack
« on: November 23, 2018, 22:42:13 PM »

If you have codec issues (basically interpreters for file types, such as MP3, ogg, etc) then you can just install this bad boy and never have to worry 'bout that again.

Download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack - MajorGeeks

Thanks to @SandHog for making me remember that. It's an excellent tool.

Don't give up on this forum, Buddha. I'm hoping that it gets wheels. You've got me excited to engage in breaking my rut and having fun playing the guitar again and this is the venue I'm hoping will do it for me.

It's not up to me, really. I won't give up on it, that's for sure. But, it's just like the FNGT. I just put it here and get it started. It's up to you folks to make it into something special.

When I started the weekly guitar threads, it was often pretty much just me sharing - sometimes only a few comments from one or two other people. I didn't give up then. I don't give up easily, actually. I built it as a framework, figuring it could do some good for people that really wanted to spend some effort working on and teaching their musicianship.

(I found a bug! Quote doesn't work in quick reply! I'm not going to try to squish it tonight.)

That was a pain in the ass. Alcohol probably didn't help.

Also, there's a shoutbox. Dunno why, but it seemed appropriate.

Is the first profile look available? The darker one?

All the themes that you see should be available. There are Dani, Orange Crush, SMF Default, and Core. They're a pain in the ass to customize when I don't really know CSS very well. and some of them call on external libraries like bootstrap.

At the link provided, it's the top-most option. It's under look and layout in your profile settings. I can't link directly to it, 'cause of the security token involved.

As you're user 3, this link might take you to the page, but you'll still need to click to edit. It's part of the security built in to SMF. Profile of COF

And, I'm kinda enjoying the work. It's "done", as in ready for use, but I still keep poking at it. If you check my profile, it'll tell you how long I've been logged in *and* actively using the site, more or less. I've been having fun!

General Discussion / You may now pick among serveral themes.
« on: November 22, 2018, 13:20:14 PM »

I was up early this morning and pretty bored. So, I mucked about with FNGT for a while, before I went to help in the kitchen. I have since been kicked out of the kitchen.

But, I might as well announce this now, though I figured I'd do it later. I'll even make it sticky for a while. (I wonder if I can make stickies auto-expire? That seems like a good feature and I'm sure you've all noticed my love of stickies.)

You can pick among several themes now. That's right... Ol' Buddha actually edited images, CSS, and HTML - all things I pretty much suck at. I spent the morning learning the rudiments of Firefox's Developer Tools. They enabled me to find the right line number in the HTML or CSS (some themes have more than one CSS loaded) and from there I was able to guess and make a bunch of edits until I figured out what was doing what! That worked.

I'm sure I fucked it up, 'cause I used hard values in some places. Instead of %, I used hard *px values. In the default theme, "Dani", I could actually now edit it so that the cassette image didn't overlap. I know how to do that now! But, I kinda like it.

Anyhow, if you want to change your theme, the link is right here - it's the topmost option:

https://fngt.gq/profile/?area=theme

Also, have a nice image. I couldn't figure out where to put it or anything. I like it. I will share it. Enjoy!

Educational Resources / Learn to Read Guitar Tab (PDF)

How_To_Read_Guitar_Tab

I think maybe I should *try* to label these as beginner, intermediate, advanced... Maybe... Those are really, really fuzzy categories, however.

And, your best option is probably to download it. The web interface sucks.

You'll want to download it, as reading it with their interface sucks donkey dick.

See? It works now. Voat was lagging. I also included the https:// part of the URL.

We'll see if it's responding now...

Voat - have your say

Ah, voat is lagging. It only allows a very small amount of time for the server to return a response. It does that so that it can't be used to do a denial of service attack on the site.

https://voat.co

I just typed the full URL

Code: [Select]
https://voat.co

And the site uses BBCode, not markdown. So it's like:

Code: [Select]
[url=example.com]text[/url]

BBCode is older than markdown, which is what Voat uses. I can't find a plugin to enable markdown on the site - if I find one, I'll definitely add it.

Site Questions / Would you like to make the forum use by invitation only?
« on: November 20, 2018, 12:09:31 PM »

You'd each get x-amount of invite codes and they'd replenish themselves ever x-days. (I can muck with those.)

Guests would need an invitation code in order to register. I can also replenish codes if there's an influx, though I doubt there would be much of one, but you never know. I'm thinking that some folks who aren't really 'goats' might want to visit, as I will probably share this site on a couple of other link aggregation sites.

It'd cut down on abuse/spam. It'd make the site a member's only type of site, which might turn some people off - or it may just make them want to join and participate.

I'm really indifferent, but think it's a nifty feature. As this site isn't about me, or necessarily even about what i want, I'm going to toss this at the community (such as it is.)

I'll be making zero changes until after the poll has expired. The poll is open for 14 days. Anyone can register in that time, regardless of how the poll ends up. I have confirmed and tested the modification and it will work with this site and with this theme. Please add any comments you can think of, with regards to this subject, as a comment to this thread.
