Site Questions / Your input is wanted!
« on: December 10, 2018, 17:54:58 PM »

Categories are things like General, Resources, or Archives.

Boards are things like Tools, Anything Else, or 2018 Archives.

@MrHarryReems suggested a recording board, which was placed in the general category. @SandHog was talking about gear and the reviews board was created under the resources category.

Ol' Buddha isn't nearly as creative as one might think!

So, give me some input. What sort of boards would you like to see? What categories would you like those boards to be put into?

Even if you can't immediately think of something you want to put in there, toss the idea onto the table.

Warning: You may end up being the moderator of said category. Nope, mods are just janitors more or less. It's nothing fancy, but it becomes your responsibility to keep it neat and tidy. Don't worry, it's easy and it's not like we've really got to delete shit. 'Snot like we've inundated with trolls being assholes. We shouldn't even have a SPAM issue, with the way the site is configured.

So, yes... You may end up with a tiny bit of responsibility, but at least you're a member of the Cool Kids Club©!

Seriously, gimme some more board ideas and whatnot. If you do propose a category, at least make sure you can think of one or two boards that can go into it, please. I'm not a huge stickler for everything being on-topic, so if you want a category for something as outlandish as food and drink, we can do that. I don't see those being boards, but I use them to give you ideas.

Thanks in advance! More categories would maybe be a good thing. Giving people more options is a good thing, up to a point. So, let's have some options!

Site Questions / Have you taken a look at the site stats page?
« on: December 10, 2018, 17:42:19 PM »

I have public stats enabled, as it's a nice way to motivate people. Maybe I can find a few ways to have contests or something and we can have some sort of rewards system? Anyhow, that's a long ways down the road. Right now, the site hasn't even been open to the public for a month!

Right now, we're doing fantastic! Take a look:

Friday Night Guitar Thread Community - Statistics Center

That's right, y'all are kicking ass and not even bothering to take names! There are forums that have been around for years and not had this much activity. My plan appears to be working! I put the framework here, you build what you need to build on it. Just doing archives would have been okay, but this seemed like a more productive route to take. So, it's not just archives and it's great to see you all taking advantage of this.

Hmm... I should probably write something up and do the rounds, letting the rest of the people know about this site. That way, they can register before it goes invite-only, however that's more a note to myself than it is anything else. That will happen, I've just not set a date in stone yet.

Either way, the point is that the site is starting to mold itself into what you want it to be. Much like the guitar thread, it's just a framework for you to use. I just get it started and facilitate it. What you do with it is, for the most part, up to you. The stats show me that you're actually making use of it. The number of page displays is particularly impressive.

General Discussion / @COF Archive question.
« on: December 10, 2018, 17:30:15 PM »

@COF I was looking at your most recent archive and I noticed it had like 541 views.

I don't suppose you've paid attention to those and happen to know what the highest number of views has been thus far? 541 is pretty damned impressive, considering that each person is only counted once. (Yes, I checked that such is how Voat works.)

My reason for wanting to know is mostly 'cause I'm curious about what is the most amount of people we've reached in a FNGT. To me, it's not just about those that share and comment, but it's also about those that listen and enjoy. Seeing 541 was pretty exciting! It made me pretty damned pleased.

Unfortunately, as nice as the archives are, there's no real (easy) way to really smash the data together and get more information, plot graphs, etc...

Hmm... That does make me wonder about a way to do just that sort of thing. It'd be neat to be able to visualize the data and I suspect your archives can be scraped and inserted into a DB, seeing as you've used the same format for them all. I will ponder data visualization solutions! (That's gonna be a long, long minute. That sort of project would be one way out on the back, back, back burner!)

Site Questions / Announcement: Feedback wanted regarding user promotions.
« on: December 09, 2018, 23:10:32 PM »

This is likely to be rambling, it's nothing even remotely formal. This is the start of something formal. Some of you will be familiar with the way I work and will recognize this as a part of the process.

If you've been in the business long enough, you'll probably be pretty familiar with promotion. We're always promoting ourselves and even other bands. We're promoting venues, gear, songs, shows, etc...

And, this site is about music.

It's gonna end up having people who want to promote something. It's going to happen, assuming people keep being active.

I'm all for allowing active users to use things like affiliate links in their product reviews. Damned right, I am. You took the time to review the product and recommend it. Why shouldn't you be allowed to use an affiliate link and maybe make a dollar or two if someone buys the product you recommended?

I have no problem with that. None.

Want to promote your new CD? Absolutely. Hell, let me (or probably even @COF) know and we'll maybe figure out a way to make it an announcement. We're happy that you've just cut a new album and done the work to produce it. Damned right, we will help you profit - if we can. I know damned well how hard it is to make a living in this industry.

But, there has to be a reasonable limit. It's just not cool to (eventually) have people join who just want to promote their goods/services and not give back to the community. Like I said, active users should be able to go ahead and promote their shit. Fuck, make a banner and I'll throw it up somewhere for a while. I want you to succeed. I want very much for you to succeed.

Shit, contact me if you want cheap hosting and help making a site. I'll even hook you up there. Seriously, if you want to get started with your own blog/site about music - let me know! I have ZERO problems helping you out. (You will have to pay for your own hosting, but I can hook you up with solid hosting at dirt cheap prices. I've got plenty and almost always use 'reseller' accounts.)

I (we, I'm pretty sure) want you to succeed. We all want each other to succeed. We all want you to be able to enjoy your musicianship and get your music out there.

We want you to make a few bucks. If you want to use an affiliate link in a product that you legitimately own and reviewed, of course you can. That's quite okay. That's not even remotely a problem.

But, this sort of thinking is subject to abuse. "You said it's okay that we use affiliate links!" That's an easy excuse for someone to use when it's true - but they've done nothing to help the community out. I don't want people here just to advertise their band, or things like that. I want people here to be members of the community and then advertise their band, if that's what they want to do.

So, we're gonna need some formal rules.

We're going to have to draw a line in the sand.

That line can be, "on a case by case basis and decided by the admins or moderators of those particular boards." However, that's not very standardized and won't work very long if we actually get busy. Not to mention that some of us may get busy elsewhere and not really have time to investigate.

Sure, there's a report post feature - and one of us admins (or the board moderator) will see the reports. Still, that only gives us a place to start.

I'd like to know what the community wants - before it becomes a problem.

And no, no... Saying, "No promotions!" isn't going to work here. That's not an option. We're musicians. Promoting is what we do - and making money from it is why we do it (usually). Yes, it's okay if someone writes a review and uses an affiliate link. Of course it's okay - so long as they're active participants.

Give me some feedback. Let me know what you think. Let me know what sort of hard and fast rules should be put in place to make this work.

Thanks.

LOL

It's a forum. Forums are for communication. That's their whole purpose, @LegalPERSON !

This site is much like the guitar threads. It's not just the archive, it's a framework for you.

You gonna have some music for us tonight? What's going on? Jump on in, the water is pretty warm.

Tools / K-lite codec mega pack
« on: November 23, 2018, 22:42:13 PM »

If you have codec issues (basically interpreters for file types, such as MP3, ogg, etc) then you can just install this bad boy and never have to worry 'bout that again.

Download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack - MajorGeeks

Thanks to @SandHog for making me remember that. It's an excellent tool.

That was a pain in the ass. Alcohol probably didn't help.

Also, there's a shoutbox. Dunno why, but it seemed appropriate.

General Discussion / You may now pick among serveral themes.
« on: November 22, 2018, 13:20:14 PM »

I was up early this morning and pretty bored. So, I mucked about with FNGT for a while, before I went to help in the kitchen. I have since been kicked out of the kitchen.

But, I might as well announce this now, though I figured I'd do it later. I'll even make it sticky for a while. (I wonder if I can make stickies auto-expire? That seems like a good feature and I'm sure you've all noticed my love of stickies.)

You can pick among several themes now. That's right... Ol' Buddha actually edited images, CSS, and HTML - all things I pretty much suck at. I spent the morning learning the rudiments of Firefox's Developer Tools. They enabled me to find the right line number in the HTML or CSS (some themes have more than one CSS loaded) and from there I was able to guess and make a bunch of edits until I figured out what was doing what! That worked.

I'm sure I fucked it up, 'cause I used hard values in some places. Instead of %, I used hard *px values. In the default theme, "Dani", I could actually now edit it so that the cassette image didn't overlap. I know how to do that now! But, I kinda like it.

Anyhow, if you want to change your theme, the link is right here - it's the topmost option:

https://fngt.gq/profile/?area=theme

Also, have a nice image. I couldn't figure out where to put it or anything. I like it. I will share it. Enjoy!

Educational Resources / Learn to Read Guitar Tab (PDF)

How_To_Read_Guitar_Tab

I think maybe I should *try* to label these as beginner, intermediate, advanced... Maybe... Those are really, really fuzzy categories, however.

And, your best option is probably to download it. The web interface sucks.

Beatles-Gear-pdf

You'll want to download it, as reading it with their interface sucks donkey dick.
