Title: Continuing with a theme...
Post by: TheBuddha on September 10, 2019, 11:37:54 AM

Yesterday, I showed off my "luxurious" travel. I did, too. I contacted both @Nadeshda and @crazy_eyes off site and said that I was on here showing off.

In my defense, it was a successful gambit! Both of 'em came over and said hello.

This morning, we acquired a car (specifically a loaner from a nearby dealership) and ate a delicious, hearty breakfast. We had our breakfast delivered right to this hotel room.

Except, well, it's a bit of a misnomer to call it a "hotel room." If it  were strictly up to me, I'd be in a cheap Econo Lodge. However, the missus will be along in 'a few days.' She'll be along largely because I bribed her with food and creature comforts. Do note that she hasn't actually reserved a specific flight time, or anything like that. The company we've been using prefers a 24 hour notice, and can't commit to anything with less than 24 hour notice. Well, they can, but boy don't they raise the price!

Anyhow, we are in a fancy hotel room. Wanna see? Open the first attachment!

The bathroom is even kinda fancy. I have a choice of a bidet or a regular toilet, for starters. But, it also includes fancy boxes for the various toiletries you might see at other hotels.

See the second attachment! (I'm not sure the picture will be clear enough to read them all, but you can get the general idea.)

And, the last attachment is my bed. The couch pulls out, if you move stuff around. But, this is the bed where I sleep. It's pretty comfy!

For reasons too mundane to get into, I don't get baby-time until like 15:00. So, we jammed for a while and we're just going to let room service feed us lunch. But, now you can see a bit of what we see when we look around. It's pretty fancy. There's even a kitchenette, but it's not like the kitchenette you get in a cheap hotel. It's got like a dishwasher, real stove, etc..

It also has bottles of water,  just tiny 12 oz bottles, for $2 each. It's not even fancy water. It's like cheap spring  water, Dasani stuff I think it's spelled.

I should probably, someday, work on figuring out how to make the images all the same dimensions.

To save space and speed, I just plug my phone in and browse it as an MPT. I open it with my handy dandy gpicview on my laptop and grab a 'selection' with Shutter.

This is actually pretty speedy and it leaves me with the higher resolution files for posterity (or, more probable, eventual deletion when I've become frustrated with the quantity of pictures on there). This is all well and good, but they end up with rather varied dimensions.

I am not OCD, or anything. I just figure someone else probably is and eventually they're gonna be like, "Why the fuck can't you be consistent!?!"

Well, I suppose if, after flying in on a chartered jet and obtaining a BMW to drive, if that's the best you can do I suppose it will have to do. I further assume EH is willing to compromise and accept the current conditions. The struggle is real ;).

I'd write more but I have to go clean out my gutters and do my own grocery shopping.

I also have a bowl of fruit. They 'membered from last time that I want a bowl of fruit every day.

Also, when I look out the window, I am looking down on the pedestrians!

We ordered lunch. I followed EH's lead and we ordered 'comfort foods'. I ordered grilled ham and cheese, tomato soup with saltines, potato wedges, and a side salad.

None of those are on the menu, but they'll make 'em. My cheese better be provolone!

Yup, peak luxury and we ordered comfort foods. She ordered a burger and stuff.

Be safe up on that ladder. You don't want to fall and smash a femur, trust me.

Around 15:00, I'll be gone for a couple of hours and then I will be back (as time allows). I'm going to give my daughter a break and babysit for the night. I think tomorrow I'll take her out to a museum and regale her with stories of my misspent youth, even though she won't understand.

Now that's a BDE (again, but baby-better). It is indeed a great thing you are enjoying the things you have earned. You nearly missed the chance to continue to  do so, so live it up.

What type of museum are you considering? Art, music, science, history? Sounds like a great time and will get your walking PT in, but I'd save the jogging for a little later. Precious cargo and all.

Howdy to EH o/. If she gets bored, there's email (hint, hint).

There's a naval museum not far away, so that's a probable destination for tomorrow. I'll probably also take the baby toy shopping, but that needn't be in the same day. I don't have to be back in Maine for almost two weeks, so we've got a little bit of time to play with. I'm not going to VIR until later this week.

I also just enabled FNGT to show 'insecure' content and, amazingly enough, the quote and quick reply are  now working properly again!

I'm willing to bet there's an "http" instead of an "https" somewhere in there. I don't see me downloading and fixing it, but you never know. 'Snot like I've got tons of things to do that preclude that. It just requires sufficient motivation and a whole lot of searching/time.

And, I shall let EH know - but I'm guessing she already knows. She's all the way across the room, engrossed in some movie or television show. We don't actually get television where I live, so it's abnormal to be able to just use a remote and watch regular television.

Oh, wait... She says she's channel surfing and not watching anything.

I am just testing.

I'm testing making a post without an account. It should show up ONLY after COF or TheBuddha approves it.

So, for example, I'd like to request an invitation code please?
Title: Re: Continuing with a theme...
Post by: TheBuddha on September 10, 2019, 13:53:15 PM
Well, that appears to work. If I knew my FTP password, I'd go fix the content blocked thing. It's loading http instead of https. I found it!

I suppose I can find said password, but I don't see me doing that today.

Questions, questions

Why do we never get an answer
When we're knocking at the door?
Because the truth is hard to swallow
That's what the war of love is for

The Naval museum sounds interesting. What is quick reply?

The difference in non-nested replies here takes some getting used to, along with a general audience. But at least this site doesn't have access problems 5 or 6 times a day ;). Can non-admin/mods set notifications to their email? Since there's no envelopes or tab notifications it's the only way I know of something new.

As for Biff, I just meant when she's bored and wants something to do. Rarity makes them all the more special.

VIR = Virginia International Raceway.

Quick reply may require enabling it in your profile settings, but it's at the bottom of every thread (assuming it's enabled). It lets you reply without going to a new page first, thus a quick reply. It also doesn't list the full bevy of bbcode/markdown options.

Everyone can set various notifications.

At the top of your page, there's a link for new comments or new threads. That's handy.
https://fngt.gq/unreadreplies/ (https://fngt.gq/unreadreplies/)
https://fngt.gq/unread/ (https://fngt.gq/unread/)

In your profile, or under "attachments and other options" for each reply, you can enable automatic notifications of new replies. On top of that, you can subscribe. Say in "General Discussion" you want notifications of all new threads in that board, just click the "notify" up near the top, listed above the different topics submitted. You may need to mouse-over it, to read the text, depending on the theme you're using.

You can adjust some settings here:
https://fngt.gq/profile/?area=notification (I think that'll work for you. Profile > Notifications is where it should take you.)

I still have no baby. My daughter is running late.

Root around in profile, under Modify Profile, and you'll find tons of options.

If required, I can probably write up some sort of FAQ, but I'm not sure I want to devote time to that. That's a block of time that I don't have. Just poke around in your profile and there's a lot of choices.

Also, note that there are two replies to this, So, scroll up and you'll see my other reply.

Also, say you want to get notifications for EVERY new topic in General Discussion. This image will show you how to do that.

http://pix.toile-libre.org/upload/original/1568145229.png

That's in General Discussion (as you can see from the text on the left). That same option is available for every board, and sub-board.

In fact, if you were going to enable such, I'd suggest you do so for the hidden admin board that only you and I can see. Then, should I make a post in there you will automatically get a notification. I should also click that button, and indeed I shall go do so right this minute.

(Yup, I still have no baby)

Also, there are now *three* replies.

Post by: COF on September 10, 2019, 15:36:05 PM
Thanks. I've already had all of those set. I'm sure others who may see this will be helped and you can use this text if you do a FAQ article.

Also, I figured out what VIR was and went back and edited out that question, so I guess edits take a while after originally posting. Since we're over here for a while, I just keep this tab open and refresh when I get an email of new comment. Works fine.

"...Wai ay ting is the hardest part".

There's that, as well. That'll enable notifications. If you hadn't had that ticked, you can do the full reply and, under attachments and options, tick the box to turn on notifications for this *specific* thread.

And, I have a sleeping baby. We had a great early dinner with just EH, my daughter, the baby, and myself. Then I purloined the baby! She's sleeping. This baby sleeps too much, and too well. She's got wigglin' figured out. She wiggles and flails about like a pro. Even when she's sleepin', she's got her legs moving sometimes.

If I pretend I'm displeased with the baby waking me up, I am pretty sure (perhaps hopeful) that nobody will believe me. She took a couple of hours to go back to sleep.

Also, I forgot to mention that the hotel in NYC sent fliers up to the rooms to tell of an impending round of window washing. They wanted to warn us and, for privacy reasons, wanted us to all close our shades. I took a pic of said notice, but never posted it. It's all good, as it's not really significant. It's just something different. Either way, we were gone from said hotel room before they seemed to have made any effort to clean our windows.

"Now go the fuck to sleep".  :D

Get some rest, do some craiglist shopping from the couch.

Yeah, it'll freeze your taint as well as make it warm and spectacular.

I am "in" for the day. I picked up some treasures for the kid, stopped at a credit union, ate Indian (dot, not feather) food, and then went for a saunter around. This morning was a museum trip, but the baby doesn't seem very interested in ships.

I'm not even sure I have motivation to browse Craigslist. I should probably start, but I've got time. I don't have to be back until the 21st. We've got a show on the 22nd. There's no new material to go over, so we won't need more than a quick play-through of a few songs, just to make sure we're all on the same page. We've been together long enough to have learned to trust each other - and to demonstrate that we're trustworthy.

EH says hello.

That ship is an impressive piece of engineering and manufacturing. Thanks for the pic. Do they allow people to tour the entire ship? I would imagine that would take hours if so, and lots of ladders. Prob not something you would care to or be able to do. Not sure how interesting it would be to landlubbers anyway.

The nice thing about looking for a car is you don't have to buy one if something doesn't catch your eye. There'll always be something that does at some point and you well know how to get to your home from just about anywhere. Or it could be an adventure for the future. Just spitballing, you surely don't need my input.

Has the missus actually decided to come, and if so when? As great as EH is, I'm sure it would nice to have the missus to talk to and share things with.

Tell the little miss I said hello and hope she's having a good time. Did she ever schedule her GED?

The missus is slated to fly down on Saturday. She will fly back near the start of the week, so she won't be here long. She's probably just coming for the delicious food and accommodations!

And, EH and I have loads of great conversations. In some ways, they're better than the missus! The missus already knows everything! EH admits to still learning! And no, she'll schedule sometime after we return.

She said to say, "I'm having a great time, thanks." Then she went back to doing whatever it was she was doing. I am not sure, but I think she's texting J. That's what she was doing earlier and I'm not gonna ask. If I ask, I'll learn what she's texting and I don't really want to do that!

Also, yeah, the whole ship is accessible - from what I could tell. I didn't bother going below deck, but there were stairs to take me down if I'd wanted to. The baby was not dreadfully interested and they would not let me stick her in one of the guns to take a cute picture. So, we didn't stay very long.

They have guided tours and stuff like that, but I hate guided tours of museums and other similar stuff. If it had been just me, I'd have cheated and sent them an email ahead of time just to see if my honorary would get me extra access. It's remarkably handy to be Dr. TheBuddha when you want to access stuff like that. It's actually one of the few things a honorary and academic email address are good for.

I'll go car shopping, but probably not tonight. I got remarkably little sleep last night. Like, little sleep - even for me. I've got dinner coming and they brought two bottles of wine up ahead of time. So, I'm going to be right here doing pretty much nothing. I must have walked several miles (total) today. Much of that was with the added weight of a baby.

LOL Earlier, EH would reach over and try to touch the baby and I'd shoo her hand away saying, "Mine! My baby! No touch!"

Which was amusing and about the only cute story I can think of at the minute.

My brain is frazzled, even.

Looks like the kind of ships that they build around here. I had to do some work at a shipyard that was building nave destroyers or something and it was impressive to see all those ships under construction sitting on dry land. I would love to be there for the launching of one once.  There is a ship called the USS Green Bay currently in use by the Navy. That's even closer. I dont really like guided tours either. I would lag back and lose the group and look around by myself. I have to work this evening, even though I don't really like working in the evening or at night, but its part of a larger project and this step takes the businesses phones and internet down for a while so I have to do this work outside of business hours. Have a great evening spending time with that precious little baby

Thanks. Hope work isn't too shitty for you.

And, sometime I'll see if I can get a buddy to let me into BIW (where they make giant military ships). I'm not sure what I'll be allowed to take pictures of, but I'm pretty sure I can get in there.

Also, the baby tuckered me out. I sent her home for the afternoon and night! I'll see her again tomorrow afternoon. We've got plans for tomorrow, so at least I should have something to write about.

And, yeah... I figured you'd get a kick out of seeing that ship. She's a beauty. I've seen similar ships do a full broadside and even salutes. When those guns go off, you can FEEL the sound move through you. It's as awesome as you might imagine!

I'm not sure I want a modern Jaguar @crazy_eyes.

I am unlikely to invest any time today @COF. I'm kinda beat.

For both of you, I am obviously not going to be opening the FNGT this week, or even next. This weekend has the missus rolling in early on Saturday, so I shouldn't stay up late.

See? I even 'membered to click thanks!

And, I'm not even 100% certain that I'll show up. If I do, I do have a track to share. I got a couple more tracks finished and sent to me by email. Other than that, I've not really got much of anything doing.

Man... I am exhausted. The kid can't even walk yet, and already she exhausts me.

Entirely unrelated: EH is in her glory. She called room service for ice cream. They didn't have black cherry, but they seem to have sent someone to get some as they just delivered an entire half gallon of the stuff, still in the carton. I'm morbidly curious to see if she eats all of it in one sitting. I've no idea how she stays skinny.

I have no idea how my girlfriend stays skinny here either. She eats more than I do and weighs less than half what I do. Yet she eats more than me. It doesn't add up. And I know she's no bulimic, there's no purging besides coming out the rear end. It's ridiculous

I'm still underweight. I eat a shitload of calories, but can't get back to my usual weight.

Update: She did not eat all the ice cream, but she says she's going to try to finish it all tomorrow. Notably, she offered me none of it.

Also, it's like 48° back home. It's like 85° here.

Hey. Man, I'm worn out too. Spent all day helping my Gson get most of his room arranged. Had to move a bunch of stuff out first so had to clean out a closet to put the stuff in his closet into.

Now I have 11 roommates. My Gson won't move in till this weekend, but he brought his 10 snakes and a gecko. Mostly boa's of various kinds, a corn snake, and a hog-nosed. They're beautiful creatures, primitive and ancient. Oh yeah, I also have a freezer full of rats. When he comes he'll be bringing his dog, so there'll be lots of life around here.  This will be interesting.

Sounds like you picked  good hotel. EH is living like a princess, so happy she gets to enjoy it. She'll be back to shoveling poop soon enough.

Got storms moving in. Better not lose power again, I've paid my dues for  a while.

I quite like snakes. They're delicious!

On a more serious note, I suspect the additional life, as well as activities, will e good for you. And, dogs are awesome. They'll patiently listen to your deepest woes and concerns, and they're happy for the attention. Also, they make great faces.
