Until about 30 minutes ago, I was wanting to say Tom Petty was a better guitarist than he really was. I decided to listen to his entire discography. That was a mistake.

One thing he certainly was, was an excellent songwriter.  His music was very accessible and reached a lot of people.

TheBuddha:
I can mostly agree with that, until I start looking at his stuff that didn't make the charts. There's some gems, but there's also some really bad stuff in there. When he nailed it, he nailed it well.
