I can mostly agree with that, until I start looking at his stuff that didn't make the charts. There's some gems, but there's also some really bad stuff in there.

When he nailed it, he nailed it well.

One thing he certainly was, was an excellent songwriter.  His music was very accessible and reached a lot of people.

Until about 30 minutes ago, I was wanting to say Tom Petty was a better guitarist than he really was.

I decided to listen to his entire discography. That was a mistake.
